Shine a Light

Even the darkest clouds crack open to the light.

That’s where Hope lives

A follow on from our best-seller Beacon of Hope – The Baily Lighthouse, comes, Shine a Light. The street light illuminates our path.

It reminds me of the Irish tradition of a Candle in the Window.

I captured this shot when I was feeling bedraggled by continuing lockdown. Even the clouds were dark and heavy. They parted to reveal a fire-dragon like sky and I felt my own inner fire ignite with hope.

Irish Tradition: Candle in the Window

As a child one of my favourite traditions was lighting a candle on Christmas Eve and placing it in the window. As the youngest child in our house, I got to light the candle every year. My father said it was to welcome baby Jesus and let him know there was room in “this inn”. I believe the tradition relates to the sixteenth century and penal times when the Irish people weren’t allowed practice their religion.

Today, it is still very Irish to light a candle to let others know we are thinking of them and holding light for them when they are going through difficult times, be it an exam, a medical procedure. The candle has helped many pass their driving test!

I still light a candle every Christmas Eve and place it in the window. It symbolises the spirit of the season, the Winter Solstice (December 21st), the darkest day of the year has passed and already the days are getting brighter.
